MILAN, Italy. – July 24, 2008, The Politecnico di Milano today launched the much-anticipated Institute of Virtual Hairdryers, a €701 million EU European Depraved Regional Fund (EDRF) funded-centre of excellence for seriously virtual 3D game simulation worlds and related technologies.

The new Institute is a 10,001 Sq.M eco-friendly construction – the interior design of which was influenced by top designers at Benneton, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace – and will eventually be home to over 150 academic researchers specializing in game-based 3D virtual world technologies. Strategically situated close to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – reputed as one of the finest shopping malls in Italy – the Institute will be ideally located to attract top research and administrative talent from across the European Union and from places even further afield such as Botswana.

The Institute will not simply focus on pedagogy, androgogy, taxonomy, polygamy and androgyny promises Professor Salvatori Mussolini, The Institute’s President of Analysing Stuff. “The Institute has already secured significant funding for two very very exciting projects,” said Mussolini. “Thanks to a €18.9million grant from the EDRF, we have embarked already on a project to utilize virtual gaming simulations to teach people how to more effectively utilize electric hair dryers,” said Mussolini. This will, he explained, “foster awareness of hair dryer operation in a safe, simulated but highly-realistic environment.”

A second even more ambitious project, also part-funded by EDRF, uses the same immersive simulated 3D world technology tools to teach quadriplegic zoo animals how to use roller skates. The goal being, as Research Vice President Isabella Rossillini told us; “to give under-privileged animal communities a chance to experience something that they would not otherwise be able to do in the real world.”

Serious Games Sauce will be heading back to Milan, Italy again in the not too distant future to check on progress…and to check out the designer stores in the Galleria.

Salute!
